mare culturale urbano (‘urban cultural sea’) is an arts centre located in the west of the city. It aims to create a new territorial development model of the suburbs, by establishing a close relationship with the local community. This hub promotes international exchanges and triggers social inclusion, urban regeneration and cultural innovation in an undervalued neighbourhood. The idea to create mare was developed in 2013. After winning a call issued by the city of Milan in 2014, the project was brought to life thanks to the collaboration between the city and a social housing foundation, which revamped a traditional farmstead, Cascina Torrette di Trenno, today hosts mare’s headquarters. mare has been included in the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities, which brings together cities, industry and citizens to improve urban life through more sustainable integrated solutions.
